It’s difficult to know where to begin when a loved one passes away and you’re faced with the enormous job of clearing out their home or apartment. It is emotionally and physically draining for those who are already wary of loss to go through all of their belongings, much alone the addition of professional, storage lockers, garages, or outside sheds. Cleaning another person’s home may be a time-consuming and exhausting task, especially when you have other things going on in your life.
What is an estate cleanout?
Estate cleanouts are the process of removing items from a house, apartment, garage, storage locker, or other building after someone has died. It is usually done by family or executors of the estate. The job can be overwhelming for many people because not only is it necessary to remove all of their belongings but also to dispose of them in a way that is respectful. Estate cleanouts are not easy when you’re emotionally drained, which is why it’s best to hire a cleaning company in order to both protect yourself and your loved one’s belongings.
When should I begin an Estate Cleanout?
Estate cleanouts must take place immediately after the death of a family member. If it takes place too late, it can become even more overwhelming. If necessary, families should be able to work together to help one another out in order to dispose of all belongings and make sure that everything is sanitized and clean after death.
Spectrum Cleaning & Restoration takes Estate Cleanouts seriously. We want clients to feel like family because everyone deals with loss in different ways and we want Estate Cleanouts to be as easy as possible for all parties involved. We work with family members, social workers, guardians, attorneys, house mangers, and building managers as well as community and public authorities to help families transition safely and easily through the Estate Cleanout process.
Purpose: Estate cleanouts are important not only because it is respectful to the deceased and their belongings but also because these items can often be extremely dangerous. Estate cleanouts ensure that family, friends, building managers, etc. don’t get hurt by potentially hazardous or sharp objects such as needles or knives or harmful chemicals such as asbestos paint or other building materials. Estate cleanouts should not be attempted by the family alone. Estate cleanouts are not only difficult for family members to go through but also dangerous without professional cleaning. At Spectrum Cleaning & Restoration, Estate Cleanouts are never a problem because we have dealt with Estate Cleanouts before and know how important they are not only for the person who has passed away but their loved ones as well.

How do Estate Cleanouts Work?
Estate cleanouts involve going through someone else’s personal stuff, so there are usually a few items you do want to hold onto like Birth Certificates, Stock Certificates, real estate deeds, financial documents, life insurance policies, and items of sentimental value. Spectrum Cleaning helps you responsibly dispose of these items by either recycling them or donating them to charity. We make sure nothing goes to waste; nothing is thrown away.
What Should I Keep?
It’s important to remember that Estate Cleanouts are not Estate Sales. While you may want to keep the most sentimental of items, like photographs or sports equipment, you will definitely need to part with some items, like old electronics and clothing. It is up to you what you keep and what Board Certified Estate Sale Professionals will be able to monetize for you.
If there are certain items that have sentimental or monetary value, it is important to note them so the Estate Cleanout Team can separate them from the rest of the belongings. These personal items can either be stored for later use by family members, or sold for extra income to help cover Estate Cleanout expenses.
Spectrum Estate Cleanouts are non-invasive and respectful of the deceased’s wishes. Our Estate Cleanouts also come with a written inventory list detailing everything that was found in the home. All belongings will be handled with care and respect while we clean and restore the residence, so you can be at peace knowing your loved one’s home has been well cared for.
When Estate Cleanouts are complete, we will also dispose of any remaining items and waste that was generated or clean and disinfect the area to lessen any chance of illness. We are locally owned & operated, and have Estate Cleaning Specialists who know the area well. For more information give us a call today!
